put your plastic where
your mouth is.

This year, the #NorthForkBeachCleanUp will be held at Matchbook Distilling Co.
located at 230 Corwin Street
in Greenport, NY.

If there is one thing that we can all agree on is that we all depend on the ocean for our individual and collective health, and it is imperative to our collective benefit to preserve it and the environment at large, and to
begin so as soon as possible. Like, probably yesterday.

This year we are sponsored by Surfrider Long Island with continued support from the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society. Many thanks to Mattituck Environmental for their continued support and dumpster donation!
Could not be done without them.

First Year’s Collection • 2020: 1,670 LBS.
Second Year’s Collection • 2021: 2,478.5 LBS
Every year we try to encourage everyone to surpass the previous year’s collection. So, ONCE AGAIN, we would like to encourage some friendly competition and challenge you to pick up the most garbage from our North Fork beaches.

for the artists, makers, and creators:

2020 • First Year • 1,670 LBS
The Lin Beach House

2021 • Second Year • 2,478 LBS
Port of Egypt Marina

RULES:

1.  Beach debris and beach plastic are not mutually exclusive, and they count hand in hand. As long as it’s salty, it is fair game. If it looks like it doesn’t belong on the beach, then pick it up! WE DON’T WANT DRIFTWOOD. If it poses a threat to the environment or possible harm to others, just be a good person. Pick it up; we’ll throw it out. But the point is to eliminate plastic out of the environment. If there is any confusion, plead your case at the weigh in.

Collections are half the task. Teams are also responsible for tallying for AMSEAS, the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, and the Long Island Chapter of Surfrider.

2.  This goes without saying, but if you are a business, don’t include your plastic and debris. If you are a civilian, don’t include your personal recycling or debris. Layman’s terms: don’t include your garbage. We don’t want your garbage.

3.  Official teams can consist of 3-6 people. However, we totally encourage you to use your networks. If you wanna bribe your friends, go for it.  However, only official members of participating teams will take part in grand prizes. Teamwork makes the dream work. If your friends don’t like that, tell them to carry their weight! We will be giving away $25.00 dollar gift cards from Claudio’s Pizza each week to individuals without a team who would like to participate or do it anyway.

4. Winners will be determined by the total weight of debris and plastic in burlap bags from a hanging scale using the imperial method. Items must fit in the burlap bag in order to be weighed. However you can manage it. You got tools? Use them.

5.  Participants will have from Friday, September 2nd until Saturday, October 1st to collect the most beach debris. Each team will receive burlap bags to use for their collections. The Weigh Ins will be held every FRIDAY in September at Matchbook Distilling Co. at 230 Corwin Street in Greenport. EXCEPT: The last weight in will be on SATURDAY OCTOBER 1ST. Each team will have their beach collection of the week weighed &counted. Each team is expected to sort out beach plastic that will be given to UpSculpt, a non profit founded by Cindy Pease Roe that aims to empower action against the crisis of plastic pollution by engaging the public through art, science, and educational workshops.

Not all team members have to be present. There has to be at least one team member in order for collections to be weighed. If you don’t come, you can bring your collections the following week.

Remember, Fridays at Matchbook Distilling Co. from

WINNERS & AFTERPARTY
[6PM-9PM] at Little Creek Oysters

We will be announcing each teams’ weight counts and leads every week via Instagram.

6.  You can keep your burlap bags. Use them for your home and garden. You can have your very OWN potato sack race! That’s amazing!

7.  Non competing individuals may collect and deposit beach garbage and debris, following the same rules. If you collect at least 5 lbs of debris, you will be awarded a $25.00 Gift Card from Claudio’s Pizza. A Pizza Party! Burlap bag not included. We encourage you to use a lightweight bag for weighing.

8. Varying degrees of social distancing may apply. We don’t know what’s going on anymore. Just be cool. Wash yo’ hands.

9. Collection is limited to the North Fork AND SHELTER ISLAND. If you live on Shelter Island, you should totally participate. If you don’t, you can still collect on The Rock! Riverhead still counts. Riverhead to Orient Point. Not Port Jefferson. Not Montauk (yet). Not Oyster Bay. Not Coney Island. Not the Rockaways. NOT BLOCK ISLAND (that’s a whole other super faraway island!). There is no way for us to monitor this. So we’re counting on your word. Scout’s Honor guys! You are collecting within the North Fork region (and Shelter Island). It’s especially important since we’re gathering specific data for BOTH the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society and Surfrider Long Island. Keep it local guys. You will be disqualified.

10. Use caution when collecting. Wear gloves if possible. Aside from the “normal” debris, oftentimes there can be needles, hooks, and other sharp objects lying around unsuspecting places. Take care of the environment, and take care of yourself, too.
